Thiruchirapalli: Fishermen in Tamil Nadu have something to cheer as the state government has recently agreed to launch the wireless tracking systems for fishing vessels which will enable authorities to respond the calls of the fishermen when they are in trouble. In the context of continuous harassment from the Sri Lankan Navy, this move is expected to have an impact on such incidents. As a pilot project the radio network will be fitted on shipping vessels in Ramanathapuram district, and the cost is expected to be over $1.75 million (7 crore). The fishermen have been protesting against the detention of 1,000 Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy. The government?s plan to set up wireless system on vessels was a result of their agitation. The Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu ( ELCOT), is developing the technology for vessels. An official of ELCOT said that 4620 country boats and 1697 mechanized fishing vessels would be fitted with the system. All of them would be registered with the fisheries department in the next three months. The new project would cover all the registered fishing vessels along the 1076 kilometers coastal line of the state. The technology will be installed as GPS in mechanized boats and for the country boat it will be hand held device. Communication towers along with control rooms would be installed at Thondi, Keezhakarai and Pamban. Globally accepted Very High Frequency technology enabled with GPS would monitor movement of vessels within a radius of 10 nautical miles. Apart from that in the situation of a cyclone and strong wind the control room will be in touch with the coast guard which is enabling to take suitable measures on right time. 'One to many' communication facility enables the vessels to keep in touch with the other fishing vessels even if they have crossed the 10 nautical mile limit. The government is also looking to set up a nodal control room at Chennai where the Tamil Nadu coastal map would be uploaded in the system which enables to track the missing vessels with the help of Vessel Tracking Softwares.
