Fibre optics to enable reach of education to rural India

Pune: Union Minister for Human Resources Kapil Sibal said the center has earmarked
1,000-crore for connectivity between villages through fibre optics technology in the next 2-3 years, which would take knowledge at the doorsteps of rural India.
"
1000 crore will be spent to facilitate village connectivity through fibre optics in the next 2-3 years so that people in rural areas can have access to knowledge sitting at home," he said addressing the ''1st Parliament of Indian student Council leaders'' organised jointly by state government and Maharashtra Institute of technology (MIT) here.
Sibal asserted that government wanted to bring about a total transformation of the educational system to make it more relevant and ensure greater access to higher education to the deprived students.
He claimed that the media was not projecting the positiv eside of the country's developmental aspect.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said, "For the sake of profiteering, environment is being destroyed and there is a need to strike balance between development and preservation of natural resources in the state and the country."
He said there were concerns in the state over corruption,environment and the Naxalite menace.
Chavan said he would meet the challenges being faced by the state and strike to restore the glory of Maharashtra which had "faded" recently.
