Bangalore: While Facebook has started moving its employees to its new campus at Manlo Park, the Social Networking Company is already contemplating a second campus. The campus is to be built across the 57 acre site it procured from the Sun Microsystems for the new campus.
The Menlo Park development service manager said the move could see Facebook expand its new one million square foot campus which can hold 3600 workers. There were 1500 people working at its old head quarters in Palo Alto.
Facebook has completed renovations to one of the eight main buildings on the new campus, also known as the East campus. The construction work would continue throughout the year as Facebook workers continue to filter in from Palo Alto.
The second campus planned by Facebook on the western side of the highway 84 would be connected to the former Eastern campus by an underground tunnel.
The company, however, does not intend to start the construction of its Western campus until early 2013, but it was required to file its conceptual plans as a part of the environment review process for the entire complex.
"While the locations of the buildings and the related infrastructure have been outlined, we are still working on the final design and are excited about the potential for the site," said Slater Tow, a Facebook spokesperson.
The company has sought the approval of the city officials to eventually house 9400 employees at its two campuses.
The rapid expansion plan of Facebook is an indicator to the growth curve of a company whose Social Networking Site has more than 750 million members. The company has made a giant leap from its first team of 500 employees to its new 57 acre campus with the capacity of holding 3600 workers, and the next few years could see Signature Silicon Valley housing over 9000 employees.
