Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg Attacks 'Sexiest' Media Coverage On Marissa Mayer

Bangalore: Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, slammed media for its ‘sexiest’ coverage on Yahoo! CEO Merissa Mayer.

Sandberg, on occasion of her lecture at Stanford University On Tuesday to promote her new memoire, ‘Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead’, attacked media for its negative coverage of Mayer’s decision to end telecommuting at Yahoo. She said that the media has done this since ‘Mayer is a woman,’ reports Times of India.

A month ago, Mayer said, “There were all these employees (working remotely), and nobody knew they were still at Yahoo!” Mayer also came to the conclusion that forcing employees into the company’s offices would also thin Yahoo!’s bloated ranks, according to a Business Insider report.

Sandberg also said that it’s really hard to know what’s happening at Yahoo, indicating how media has been less sensitive in targeting Mayer without analyzing the reason behind her decision.

Mayer, on her decision, did cite her experience at Google and argued how badly Yahoo! needs to foster cohesion, and that telecommuting is a hindrance to that effort.

Along with HP CEO Meg Whiteman, Sandberg and Mayer are most high profile Women in Silicon Valley.

Sandberg’s comments on Mayer fit into larger theme that despite the extra scrutiny and institutional disadvantages faced by women in the workplace, They must be prepared to step up to the challenges if they wish to succeed.
