Bangalore: Facebook is growing at a very fast pace around the world with nearly 500 million users and has already surpassed the popularity of Orkut in a very short span of time. They are spreading their influence steadily in every country and are increasing their user base leaving all other social networking sites behind.
Facebook started in a dorm room in Harvard just six years ago and has now strengthened its position across the globe. It has brought it's position above MySpace in the U.S. In Britain, Facebook did the same to Bebo, making it irrelevant for the users. In Germany, Facebook surpassed StudiVZ, which was a dominant social network there before until February.
Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Executive of Facebook almost guarantees to reach a billion users very soon. "They have been more innovative than any other social network and they are goin to continue to grow," said Jeremiah Owyang, an analyst with the Altimeter Group. Two years ago, Facebook was available only in English but it still managed to mark its presence outside U.S. and was seen quite strong in Britain, Australia and other English speaking nations.
The individual responsible for expanding the Facebook network is Javier Olivan, a 33 year old Spaniard who joined Facebook when it just had 30 million users, three years ago. He facilitated the users by enabling them to translate the site to more than 80 languages and he did it at a very large scale which nobody had done before.
Facebook is not seen to be popular everywhere as the website is largely blocked in China and with fewer than a million users each in Japan, South Korea and Russia. It lags far behind other social networks in these countries and does not have those major markets in its portfolio.
