Bangalore: In an effort to safeguard its users from hackers, social networking giant Facebook has added new security features by providing its users a more secure encrypted connection, known as HTTPS. The company said in a blog post, "Starting today we'll provide you with the ability to experience Facebook entirely over HTTPS. You should consider enabling this option if you frequently use Facebook from public Internet access points found at coffee shops, airports, libraries or schools." The encryption used previously on Facebook when passwords are checked, is the same used on shopping and banking websites to secure connections. Facebook said the new feature is available to only some users now, but will be rolled out to everyone over the next few weeks. Certain functions including many third-party applications don't currently support HTTPS. Facebook also plans to add "social authentification" that will ask a user to identify Facebook friends from their photos. As per the new encryption, instead of the URL starting with the typical http://, you can start your Facebook with https://, the 's' meaning your connection is securely encrypted. This will protect your account from malicious users as it prevents them from spying on your account and seeing your password. To get it activated, users have to go into settings and turn it on. There has been a series of hacking of late including the Facebook accounts of celebrities such as its founder Mark Zuckerberg and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
