Goodfellas (1990)
Directed by Martin Scorsese, Goodfellas- the stylistic masterpiece lost to Kevin Costner's directorial debut, Dances with Wolves. A true story about unwavering conduct of three violent "wise guys" was a realistic, semi-documentary account tailored from both Nicholas Pileggi's and Martin Scorsese's screenplay. The film was based on Pileggi's 1985 non-fictional book Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family and film posters were subtitled: "Three Decades of Life in the Mafia." The real-life story was about a low-level, marginalized mobster (or 'foot-soldier') of mixed ethnic roots (half-Irish, half-Sicilian) - Henry Hill, who eventually broke the gangster's policy of 'never ratting on your friends', and became informer for the FBI and entered the Federal Witness Protection Program to save his life by vanishing from view and was improved by the Italian-American director's experience of his childhood in Little Italy.
