E-books, tablet PCs likely to get more buyers
New Delhi: A survey by the Boston Consulting Group says that electronic books readers and tablet PCs could become mass-market devices of the decade. Alongside televisions, personal computers and mobile phones, e-books and tablet PCs are likely to become established consumer products, the online survey says, which was done among 13,000 consumers across 14 countries. The survey claims that 28 percent of all respondents and 51 percent of those familiar with these devices plan to purchase an e-book reader or a tablet PC within the next year, which will increase up to 49 percent and 73 percent respectively within three years. It's only after the introduction of Kindle by Amazon in the late 2007 that e-books became popular among people. In March, Apple introduced iPad tablet, which is capable of doing many tasks other than reading, such as Web browsing, video viewing, photo-sharing, and e-mail. According to the survey, 66 percent of the respondents globally would prefer to buy a multipurpose device, while only 24 percent of the respondents prefer a single-function device. In the U.S., consumers are willing to pay only up to $200 for a multipurpose device, the survey says.
