Data Center 2009 gears for the next-gen green IT challenge
Bangalore: Trade Fairs and Conference International (TFCI), organized a summit called 'DataCenter 2009', focusing on the green initiatives in data centers. The objective of the conference was to provide a holistic approach to the enterprises on drivers that can help build greener data centers. Topics covered at the conference emphasized on critical factors such as people, technologies, processes, data center facilities, value proposition of the business and how to effectively manage the impending transitions. Saji Thoppil, General Manager, Compute and Storage, Wipro Infotech said, "Multiple factors are creating a unison effect on data center designs and are introducing a paradigm shift not quiet seen in the earlier history of IT infrastructure." Thoppil said that understanding the multi-dimensional effect of these factors is crucial in the planning and transformation of datacenter. The key factor which can be termed as the 'Inflection Pyramid of Data Centers' revolves around four factors namely, Moore's law, Performance per Watt, Virtualization and Density. These four factors in combination with the impact of the present economic slowdown have created an influx in datacenter far more than as appears on the surface. In a panel discussion on energy efficiencies, greening and best practices, Arvind Mathur, Chief Architect, Global Services, Sify Technologies, highlighted that, the greening of the data centers has now acquired a new dimension of relevance and reality in a globally depressive economic outlook that has forced corporations worldwide to relook at opex and capex to stay afloat. Mathur said, "Corporations today seek typically greater productivity from their fairly static IT budgets, while service providers seek means to optimize capex outlay for more efficient infrastructure sizing, seeking less power hungry systems and adopting virtualization as a mean to convert a power while increasing IT yields per kilo watt." Highlighting the importance on greening the data centers, Srinivas Chebbi, CGM and VP, ISB Region APC said, "Close to 40 percent of energy that flows into a data center goes towards power and cooling solutions. Energy efficient solutions in this space such as APC's InRow Cooling play a very critical role in achieving overall data center efficiency." Companies like Sify Technologies, Wipro, EMC Corporation, Dell, APC, Hewlett-Packard, Netmagic Solutions, Tyco Electronics, IBM, Hitachi, Airtel, Red Hat and Extreme Networks participated in the conference.
