Mumbai: Employment security crisis is further worsening in India.Convergys, a contact centre and billing solution firm has recently asked most of the employees in its Malad Centre, Mumbai to resign as the centre is going to shut down due to business slowdown. About 400 employees are working in the Malad center in Mumbai.
Convergys has eight centers in India including Malad centre. In Mumbai the company has another centre in Thane and some of the employees in Thane centre have also been asked to resign.
According to a company statement, the company has decided to consolidate all existing business performed at the Malad facility and move it to other existing locations. The size of the project does not warrant Convergys continuing this business in a separate location, so Convergys intends to close the Malad facility by August 31, 2008.
"Employees who remain with Convergys on the date of closure and who are eligible under the applicable labor legislations will be paid statutory compensation. Additionally, Convergys would pay a severance benefit to employees who continue to service Convergys until the closure. Further, Convergys would consider transfer/relocation of employees to its other existing locations," the statement added.
Company official said that most of the employees were choosing to leave rather than wait till the end of the month to collect severance pay. Though some employees have been relocated to Thane centre, which was in accordance with their position and responsibility.
Company has also plan to shift one of its processes, Optis- an Australian telecoms company, from its Thane center to the Philippines.
