Child Adoption: Indian Children Find Home In U.S.

Adopting an Indian kid is not an easy task for NRI’s; even they go through many hurdles. Inter-country adoptions have become a controversial issue now, owning to fears of human trafficking, exploitation and sexual violence. However, adoption of kids by NRI’s came into light when a rule was passed by the Bombay high court that first preference should be given to Indians for adopting an Indian kid than any non-resident Indians or citizens from overseas. One of the reason for this rule to be passed was , as one of the couple from Pune tried to adopt a girl child but the agencies refused them to hand over the child by saying that the child was already shown to  a US-couple, due this refusal the Pune couple lodged a complaint against this agency. Thus, due to these ongoing issues even Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) guidelines have passed a rule that Indian couples should be given first preference for adoption than overseas citizens.

"Adoption is increasingly being looked at only in terms of rules and procedures. But we need to keep in mind that every child has a right to a family," cited Nilima Mehta who formerly headed the state's child welfare council.

Adoptions of babies by overseas citizens are not from poorer and underdeveloped states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar but from developed states like Delhi and Maharashtra.

Moreover, India is not the only country showing concerns over child adoption, but countries like Russia and Romania have also banned inter-country adoption.
