Cheap Rice Scheme Sucessfully Rolled Out In Karnataka

Karnataka is a big state where the food culture varies from one place to another and as such people of North Karnataka and several legislators have insisted the government to include jowar and wheat along with rice.

The CM gave a ray of hope that the demands to include jowar and wheat might happen in the near future. He said, "I'll convene a meeting of officials to discuss the logistics and take a call,'' reports TOI.

For the cheap food scheme to continue without any hindrance, 2.45 lakh tonnes of rice is needed monthly. 1.64 lakh tonnes of rice are delivered from the Centre and out of the remaining 81,185 tonnes, 22,000 tonnes is procured from Chhattisgarh and the rest from the open market.

Food and Civil Supplies Department official said, "For August, we've already received 15,000 tonne from Chhattisgarh, while the remaining quantity will arrive in a couple of days,'' reported TOI.

The Government of Karnataka believed that the subsidy amount, Rs 430 crore per month is likely to come down once the Centre implements the Food Security Bill. This will help the state to save Rs 500 crore every year.

The Above Poverty Line families are yet to benefit from the cheap food scheme as of now.
