Santa Clara: VMware has taken over the Mozy which has been serving as the cloud-based storage and back up service of EMC for the last four years. The acquisition is said to be an initiative by VMware to establish itself as a cloud IT service provider and Mozy will add a first hand experience to VMware in operating a public cloud system. The deals include moving assets and staff to VMware immediately. The assets include a worldwide data centre network with more than 1 million users and 70PB of stored data. "We believe that, by being directly engaged with the delivery of such a service, VMware will further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale and capabilities into the products that we provide to our customers and public cloud partners," wrote VMware Chief Technology Officer Steve Herrod in the company's official blog. Addressing the queries over the take over, Mozy's Chief Operating Officer Charlotte Yarkoni said the company will continue to invest in its technology and services and wrote,"In fact EMC retains the Mozy business as it has been delivering it for over four years now. An operational support agreement between EMC and VMware is in place to make this possible and ensure no impact to Mozy customers."
