Indian football team entered the Asian Cup after a gap of 27 years, but despite putting its best show, the team had an embarrassing 4-0 defeat against Australia in the very first match. It's not fair to blame the players who had very little experience of playing against the world class players. The FIFA world rankings clearly affirm the result as Australia is ranked at 26th and India at 142nd.
What stops the Indian players growing up to the international level is not just the lack of skills; rather it's the poor infrastructure and inefficient administration. Height has always been an issue which is why former national football coach Bob Houghton always asked for taller players. However, the height theory is proven wrong as many world class players like Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta are just as tall as the Indian players.
The friendly match in Kolkata is going to change Indian football in many ways. As the entire world watch the FIFA match at Salt Lake stadium, the country wish the great football spectacle boost the spirit of our young footballers and the management. And undoubtedly, it's a memorable football match worth going miles to watch and enjoy at the India's football capital city Kolkata.
