Cellophane
Cellophane is a thin, transparent sheet made of regenerated cellulose. It has a low permeability to air, oils, greases and bacteria, making it useful for food packaging. Cellophane has many industrial applications also, such as a base for self-adhesive tapes, a semi-permeable membrane in certain type of battery and as a release agent in the manufacture if fiberglass and rubber products.
In the UK and in many other countries, "cellophane" is a registered trademark and property of Innovia Films Group, based in Wigton. However, in the US, "cellophane" has become genericized, and is often used informally to refer to a wide variety of plastic film products, even those not made of cellulose.
