Butterscotch
Brand Names Which Have Become Generic
Butterscotch, or correctly known as Doncaster Butterscotch, is a type of confectionery. The primary ingredients are brown sugar and butter, although other ingredients such as corn syrup, cream, vanilla, and salt are part of some recipes. According to a 1848 newspaper, the recipe for making Doncaster butterscotch was stated to be one pound butter, one pound of sugar, and a quarter of a pound of treacle; boiled together. Thus, the term "butterscotch" is used for the flavor of brown sugar and butter together, even in cases where the actual confection butterscotch is not involved. Eg. Butterscotch pudding.
