Aspirin
Brand Names Which Have Become Generic
Aspirin, also known as acetylsalicylic acid, is often used as an analgesic to relieve minor aches and pains, as an antipyretic to reduce fever, and as an anti-inflammatory medication. As part of war compensations specified in the 1919 Treaty of Versailles (following Germany's surrender after World War I), Aspirin lost its status as a registered trademark in France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, where it became a generic name. Today, "Aspirin" is a generic word in Australia, France, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, Jamaica, the Philippines, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States.
