D.H. Lawrence's "Lady Chatterley's Lover"
pg 9
"Lady Chatterley's Lover" by D.H. Lawrence is an obscene novel that depicts an aristocratic woman's illicit relationship with her gardener. The depiction of sex and politics gave rise to controversies. Published in 1928 in Italy, its publication in Britain was held back till 1960. Though the ban was revoked in Britain, India had banned the book in 1964. The petition against the ban was dismissed and Supreme Court held, "The law seeks to protect not those who protect themselves, but those whose prurient minds take delight and sexual pleasures from erotic writings". But the ban was not actively implemented as the book is available in some Indian bookstores.
