The Censor Board of India has been known to ban a lot of movies; Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen was one among them. The main problem that the Censor Board has with the movie was sits crude language and explicit sexual content. In the movie Pholan Devi is repeatedly raped and physically abused by her husband and various other men belonging to the upper caste. Eventually for revenge she turns to violence and kills a lot of the upper cast gang. The Board thought that the violence wasn’t suited to be viewed even with an Adult certification.

But the producers weren’t ready to take no for an answer and they approached the Supreme Court which gave them permission to go ahead with the release of the movie. The movie was appreciated by both the public and critics.
