Blumenthal to enquire about Amazon, Apple E-Book Deal
Bangalore: Enquiries have begun into the agreements between e-book publishers and two largest sellers of e-books-Amazon.com and Apple. This enquiry headed by Attorney General Richard Blumenthal could minimize price competition, reports Thomas Claburn of the Information Week. Amazon.com and Apple are supposed to meet Blumenthal to clarify the implications of the industry's shift from a wholesale pricing model to an agency pricing model. Blumenthal is keen to investigate about "most favored nation" (MFN) contract clauses that Apple and Amazon have apparently struck with publishers such as Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, HarperCollins and Penguin. The contractual provisions implicitly means that if a publisher reduces the price at which it offers an e-book to Apple, it must offer the same price to Amazon and Blumenthal is concerned about the pricing which will limit price competition.
