Billionth USB controller shipped by Cypress
Bangalore: 13 years after entering the USB market, Cypress Semiconductor has recently announced that it has crossed the milestone of shipping over a billion USB controllers. Cypress had entered the market with a goal to make 'USB Universal', since then it has added several USB devices into its portfolio. Cypress offers low, full and high-speed controllers, embedded hosts, hubs, application specific bridges, transceivers and wireless solutions. The growth was fueled by consumer demand in USB-enabled applications such as PC peripherals, consumer electronics and mobile handsets and augmented by increasing usage in industrial and automotive applications. "With media consumption continuing to grow and SuperSpeed USB on the way, our customers continue to help us in our growth in the USB market," said Cypress President and CEO, TJ Rodgers. Since 2005, Cypress has shipped more than 500 million USB devices. The future of USB-enabled devices looks bright with the advancement of technology. "We project the overall market for USB-enabled devices to grow to over four billion devices by 2013, driven mainly by its adoption across a broad range of PC and consumer electronics applications," said Brian O'Rourke, Principal Analyst at In-Stat, a technology research firm.
