Bangalore: Karnataka will soon have the country's first 'level III' datacenter, on its way to scoring yet another first in the e-governance sector, reports Express Buzz.
The datacenter will be used to host government applications and related data, and will have a massive storage capacity of over 90 tera bytes (TB) to meet the digital storage needs of Karnataka. The state government has already prepared a request for proposal (RFP) for the project and is awaiting approval from the central government. "In about two months from the date of approval, which could be any day now, the data centre will be operational," M N Vidyashankar, Principal Secretary of the Department of E-governance told Express.
The technical committee of the state E-governance Department has cleared the RFP, and it has been sent to the Department of Information Technology (DIT). The datacenter, partially funded by the DIT, will cost between
60 crore to
65 crore, and will come up at the Vikasa Soudha. The facility, in its first phase, will have a capacity of over 50 TB and in its second phase will have over 90 TB storage capacity.
A level III datacenter typically has advanced storage capacity and has 98.98 percent availability making it operational almost 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year. Tier III level datacenter capability allows for any unplanned infrastructure activity without disrupting the computer hardware operation. Currently, Karnataka has a level II datacenter at Khanija Bhavan.
