Bangalore: The third International Conference on COMmunication System softWAre and MiddlewaRE (COMSWARE) is being held in Bangalore from January 5 - 10, 2008.
COMSWARE is an international conference dedicated to addressing emerging topics and challenges in Communications Software. The goal of the conference is to create a gathering of researchers from academia and industry, practitioners, business leaders, intellectual property experts and venture capitalists, providing a launch pad for new innovative business and technology. The conference will include a highly selective technical program consisting of regular papers, short papers, and posters as well as specialized tracks at the intersection of business and technology. Focused workshops, tutorials and panel discussions will be held on emerging topics to allow for a lively exchange of ideas.
Yesterday (January 7) saw Prof. Kang Shin of University of Michigan speaking on 'Quality-of-Service of Networked Embedded Systems'. He underlined the fact that in embedded systems if something goes awry the system has to continue operations in spite of security compromises. Prof. Nitin Vaidya of University of Illinois followed Shin on 'Multi-Channel Wireless Networks: Theory to Practice'. Vaidya summarized his speech by stating, "Performance increases when many channels are used despite limited hardware." The inaugural speeches were concluded by Prof. Anurag Kumar of IISc Bangalore, who was in the team, which performed India's first 'Wide area packet switching' experiment. He spoke on 'Wireless Sensor Networks for Intrusion Detection' and gave insights into detection of security threats that exist in a network environment.
In the following days topics of interest that would be deliberated upon include amongst others, network-based applications (VoIP, instant messaging, p2p, streaming, location-based service), wireless/mobile networking (3G/4G, WLANs/WPANs/WMANs, mesh/relay networks, sensor networks), software advances in wireless communications (cognitive radios, dynamic spectrum access, SDR), wireless operating systems and mobile platforms and security in communication networks.

There is a special COMSWARE Business Track on 'The Mobile VAS for India and the World' today (January 8), for a select gathering. Some of the speakers for the day include Dr. K. K. Ramakrishnan, AT&T, U.S., Dr. Giridhar D. Mandyam from QUALCOMM Internet Services, U.S. and by Kiran Anandampillai, from OnMobile, amongst others. All sectors of the Mobile VAS environment - from content supplier to carriers - would be present to participate and network. Comsware Business 2008 will feature leading companies, executives, technologists, and venture capitalists providing ample time and opportunity for attendees to make connections with others involved in Mobile VAS.
