Anil co-founded SeaMicro raises $20 Million
Santa Clara: California-based SeaMicro, a low-power server maker, raised $20 million in series D round of funding. Till date, they have raised a total of $60 million from venture capitalists and strategic partners, and the fund will be used to continue to support their rapid growth, add engineers and engineering resources, expand sales organization both domestically and internationally and build marketing organizations. SeaMicro servers are plug and play, where they require no changes to software operating systems, applications or management infrastructure. It has identified the primary drivers underlying the power inefficiencies in volume servers and has systematically rectified the shortcomings. The devised a small form factor server that uses one-quarter of the power and requires only one-quarter of the space used for traditional servers. Andrew Feldman, Gary Lauterbach and Anil Rao co-founded the company, and they bring in a deep understanding of data center computation including CPU architecture, Clustering, Networking and Interconnect Technologies. The company is backed by leading VCs including Khosla Ventures, Crosslink Capital and Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and also from leading public corporations. The company has recently expanded and shifted its headquarter in Sunnyvale, California. It uses Atom chips and its own specially designed silicon to manage the networking. SeaMicro was recently recognized as an industry pioneer by the Department of Energy who swarded it one of the largest Department of Energy Grants made in all of the Telecommunicaiton and Data communication industries. Andrew Feldman, Co-Founder and CEO, SeaMicro, said that power consumption in data centers has become a significant problem, accounting for more than 75 percent of operational expenses among many companies. Anil Rao, who is one of the co-founders and is the VP of Product Management and Product Marketing, has more than 15 years of product management experience to SeaMicro. He was also the Director of Product Management and Marketing at Juniper Networks, where he lead business strategy, product definition and product marketing. Prior to Juniper, he was Director of Product Management at Force10 Networks where he played a key role in Force10's success in the largest data centers and carrier networks including Google, Yahoo! And Level3. Before this, he was in the senior product management positions at ONI (Ciena) and Procket Networks (Cisco) and senior engineering positions at AT&T and Nortel Networks where he substantially contributed to the design and development of internet routing and switching software. He holds an MBA from the Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley. He also received a Masters in Computer Science from Arizona State University. The company has build a strong and lasting relationship with the industry's top Value Added Resellers enabling them to offer SeaMicro solutions to their customers around the world. This includes Dell and Net One Systems. Its portfolio includes clients such as eHarmony, France Telecom SA and Skype.
