Amazon to hold tech talk on cloud storage system
Bangalore: Aiming to showcase some of the exciting stuff that it does in the computing space, Amazon is organizing a tech talk (Reliability At Massive Scale) on what went into creating Dynamo, its highly available key-value storage system. The event begins at 6PM on January 15 at Taj Residency on MG Road in Bangalore. Speaking at the event will be Peter Vosshall, Vice President & Distinguished Engineer at Amazon.com, responsible for a number of teams in Amazon's eCommerce Platform organization. Vosshall, who has over 18 years of industry experience designing, building, and operating large scale, highly available distributed systems will also be discussing the key distributed systems techniques used to provide both high availability and high consistency and the results and lessons learnt while building Dynamo. Dynamo is a highly available key-value storage system used by a number of Amazon's core services to provide an 'always-on' experience. It relaxes atomic consistency to provide higher availability than traditional storage systems, while still providing user-perceived consistency. Reliability at massive scale is one of the biggest challenges that Amazon.com faces; even the slightest outage has significant financial consequences and impacts customer trust. The Amazon.com platform, which provides services for many web sites worldwide, is implemented on top of an infrastructure of tens of thousands of servers and network components located in many datacenters around the world. At this scale, small and large components fail continuously and the way persistent state is managed in the face of these failures drives the reliability and scalability of the software systems.
