A Quarter of the World's Hungry People Reside in India!

The three prime indicators of the research were: the proportion of people who are undernourished, the proportion of children under five who are underweight, and the mortality (death) rate of children younger than age five. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) prepared this report along with two international charities called Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide.

The GHI for India says that the proportion of undernourished dropped from about 21 percent to 17.5 percent, the ratio of underweight fell from 43.5 percent to about 40 percent and the mortality rate of kids below the age of five declined from 7.5 percent to about 6 percent. In general, when all this is been put together, the hunger index for India declines from 24 to 21.

Other recent surveys have showed that the intake of nutritive value of food per person is crashing down. A survey of consumer expenditure said that consumption of nutritive food measured in terms of calories has declined from 2,153 kilocalories (Kcal) per person per day in 1993-94 to 2,020 in 2009-10.

Although the GHI data has produced these warnings, India continues to remain in the "Alarming" category of countries known by their severity of hunger. This has indeed led the nation to be a part of the hunger index between 20 and 29.9. Some of the other nations that accompany India are Ethiopia, Sudan, Congo, Chad, Niger, and other African countries.
