Bangalore: Chocolate candies aren’t the only kind of candies you find around the world! In many places, sweets aren’t always merely sweets. They translate into mung beans, chili pepper, and even a whiff of ammonia in chocolates in Madagascar. While we casually assume that when Americans eat ‘gummy bears’, ‘bears’ aren’t really an ingredient, the same doesn’t hold true when you visit Great Britain. After all, Percy Pigs, the candy that debuted during World War I gets its name not just from the smiling piggy face, but also from the pork gelatin that gives the candy its bulk.

So put that milk chocolate down and sample some salt licorice or a few candies made with salt, chilli and beans – expand your horizons!

New Zealand: Chocolate Fish

Chocolate Fish, in New Zealand still outdoes the local favourite chocolate-covered “pineapple lumps”. Chocolate Fish has been around since the 1950s and are so adored that they seem to have enthused their colloquialism – if you do something outstanding, a Kiwi might just say, “Give that man a chocolate fish.” The manufacturers of Chocolate Fish – Cadbury – can’t explain their origin either. This gratefully un-fishy dark chocolate covered strawberry-marshmallow filling can be found in any grocery and convenience store across New Zealand!
