Bangalore: Never mind that the word ‘patent’ is generally associated with a product company. Competition has forced IT service companies to include the word and its implementation in their repertoire, reported the Times of India today. Leading the way are companies like Wipro, Infosys which have already filed patents. Infosys, for example, has already filed 81 patents. The services firms have also started enchasing on their patents, most of which are yet to be approved. Last year, Infosys earned approximately $300 million i.e. almost 10 percent of its revenue from patent pending IP assets. Most of these patents related to tools, methods and frameworks that help in the overall solutions that are delivered to clients across various industry verticals. In Wipro’s case, most of the patents filed since 2000 are in the consumer space. The company filed 12 patents last year. The ToI noted that Wipro’s revenue generation from patents increased significantly when it made widespread acquisitions last year. Several of the acquisitions were of companies that had a number of IPs in their name. Its acquisition of Australia based NewLogic, for example, equipped its kitty with 20 patents in the Wireless LAN and Bluetooth space. Out of L&T’s 80 patents, 52 were filed from its Powai campus in Mumbai and rest came from its Mysore campus. According to the company’s statement, patents in L&T’s electrical and electronic division have now touched 247.
