Bangalore: Wipro Technologies, the global IT services business of Wipro Ltd, has entered into a strategic partnership with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to introduce the electronic processing of air freight documents. The novel e-freight system, estimated to save the airline cargo industry about $1.2 billion annually, will enable stakeholders to handle the voluminous documents online replacing the traditional paper. Wipro will develop e-freight solutions to reduce complexity and paper-based processes. According to a company statement, an average shipment involves at least 38 documents that are exchanged by various parties including shippers, airlines, freight forwarders, handling agents, import/export brokers and customs. "The IATA e-freight programme is part of its strategy to simplify the business procedures' for the air cargo industry. It aims to align stakeholders and facilitate the delivery of e-freight solutions," the statement said, quoting Wipro Technologies vice president Manoj Punja. As the industry body of passenger-cum-transport airlines worldwide, IATA is keen on speeding up the cargo processes with simple and efficient systems by eliminating paper documentation for its global customers. IATA global cargo head Aleks Popovich said Wipro, as one of its partners, would help improve message quality, develop standards and implement global systems for trading partners for cost-effective e-freight solutions. Both the partners have worked earlier on design and development of platforms, reporting applications, portals and web-based applications.
