Why Nokia Didn't Sell Its Patents To Microsoft?

The Finnish company Nokia sued Apple in 2009 and later on hit a licensing deal with the iPhone manufacturer. The brand has been a part of the long run in the tech world and this pact with Apple is believed to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Nokia.
Licensing for Nokia’s patents for 10 years will serve as a profitable objective to Microsoft. MS has been successful in convincing nearly 20 Android makers to pay patent royalties in order to elevate cost of Google Inc’s mobile operating system.

Nokia now has the liberty to chase the same Android manufacturers for royalties, although Durrant has not disclosed any specific targets.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see litigation filed by Nokia in coming months,” said one senior IP executive who has handled both parties. He also added that if Microsoft had bought Nokia’s patents, the pincer movement against Android would have been barred.

Nokia has given Microsoft a choice of converting the 10-year agreement plan to a permanent license, which Microsoft would soon work on.
