The current crisis looks beyond an easy repair as UPA's top troubleshooter Pranab Mukherjee himself is at the middle of the controversy. In a four-page letter to the prime minister, Mukherjee clarified that the controversial note from his ministry is purely an inter-ministerial document supervised by the cabinet secretariat and the prime minister's office. However, the letter has only deepened the crisis as it boomeranged the Congress claim that it was just another note by a junior bureaucrat.

The Home Minister chose to be silent even though he promised to speak out after Manmohan's arrival. In a firm show of unity, Chidambaram and Mukherjee appeared together for a brief statement to make clear the air surrounding the infamous 2G note. "I am happy with the statement read by my senior and distinguished colleague Pranab Mukherjee. I accept the statement. As far as all of us in the government are concerned, the matter is closed," Chidambaram said. Pranab Mukherjee said the note was just an inter-ministerial background paper and that it contains certain interferences and interpretations that did not reflect his views. They were accompanied by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and Law Minister Salman Khurshid. The crisis deepened further as CBI decided to file an FIR against former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran and his businessman brother Kalanithi. He will be the third big name from the DMK after its chief's daughter Kanimozhi and A Raja, to be nailed in the historic 2G spectrum scam. The then telecom mister Maran is framed for his role in compelling the original owner of telecom company Aircel, C Sivasankaran to sell off his stake in the company to the Malaysian-based Maxis group in 2006. After a few months from this deal, Kalanidhi Maran's Sun Direct TV received substantial investment from the Maxis group.
