U.S. Indian physicians plans annual convention in New York

New York: The planning for the 29th annual convention of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) to be held on June later next year was discussed by more than 100 physicians who met in New York City, reports Ela Dutt for Desi Talk. The convention which is held at the Hilton Hotel is returning to the Big Apple after 11 years. A contribution of ideas and solutions to the health care is hoped for at the by the Indian American physicians who form a notable chunk of the medical profession in this country. "We will discuss how to improve the health system, increase residency slots, hold a very big women's forum where we always come up with something new, hold several continuing medical education seminars," told Dr. Ajay Lodha, Chairman of the convention. Dr. Ajit Singhvi, president of AAPI, told that the membership of the organization has increased by 1,000 in the past six months since he took office. Singhvi has focused on young physicians. Two scholarships for young physicians to gain experience on Capitol Hill as well as a four-week rotation program for young physicians in India and the U.S. that has generated considerable interest were considered by Dr.Singhvi among his notable milestones for the group. AAPI is also lobbying to increasing residency slots in the U.S., a major priority for the group. Former Hill staffer Dino Teppara takes intiative for this effort carried out by its legislative branch. "There is going to be a 150,000 physicians shortage in the next 10 years" if residencies are not increased and other proactive steps not taken, predicted Singhvi. The event is planned to be inaugurated by former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. It will also include ministers from high level like Wayalar Ravi and also CEOs from various companies like Fortis, Apollo and Vedanta. The AAPI was able to get a good deal when it booked the Hilton site two years ago since hotels were really eager to book the events.
