Deshpande founded the company in 1990 and was into making compact Frame Relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode communication switches that were sold to telecommunication service providers worldwide. In 1997, Ascend Communications acquired the company for $3.7 billion to foray into ATM and Frame Relay markets. Later, Ascend was acquired by Lucent Technologies in 1999 in one of the largest mergers in communications equipment history for a great sum of $24 Billion. With the acquisition, Deshpande made a handsome of profit along with the CEO and several employees of Cascade.
