NEW DELHI: A top official of the income tax department has been booked for allegedly defrauding the government of 6.3 million by allowing a private firm to sell property that had been seized. Director General of Income Tax N.P. Tripathi posted in Chennai and two directors of a private firm have been charged with cheating the government, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) statement said Saturday. The statement named the two directors as K.A. Kartikeyan and J.R. Robson, of Chennai-based Iggi Resorts International Limited. The company owed the government 7.3 million in unpaid taxes and its properties were to be auctioned to recover the money. Tripathi allowed the firm to sell the property after it committed to immediately pay 1 million of the outstanding and the balance in installments, the statement said. Tripathi's predecessor had rejected a similar plea as the company had repeatedly defaulted in paying taxes. After getting permission from Tripathi, the directors sold the properties but did not pay the balance of 6.3 million that were due from it, the CBI statement said.
