NEW DELHI: The Tata Group, one of India's largest diversified business conglomerates, Thursday said it would invest 8.50 billion to boost its telecom operations in the Delhi region. Tata Teleservices Ltd., a basic telecom services provider promoted by the group, also announced the launch of its wireless and fixed line telephone services in the Delhi circle under the brand name of Tata Indicom. "We plan to invest over 8.50 billion in the next five years of its operations, leading to a direct and indirect employment generation of 2,100 jobs in the state," said Rajiv Kataria, chief operating officer of Tata Teleservices (Delhi circle). The investment will also serve to fuel growth in related industrial sectors such as the IT enabled services, Kataria told reporters here. The company has decided to launch the first phase of its fixed line services in the five commercial areas of Nehru Place, Connaught Place, Okhla, Bikaji Cama Place and Rajendra Place. Wireless services, however, will be made available throughout Delhi from the first phase itself. "While our data and wire-line services have relevance for corporate and business users, our wireless services have great appeal for residential and small business owners," said S. Ramakrishnan, managing director of Tata Teleservices Ltd. The company plans to have 16 franchisee outlets, 300 priority dealers, exclusive showrooms and retail outlets. It will also set up a 24-hour customer care centre and public telephone booths.
