Tata Motors gets licence for light armoured vehicles

NEW DELHI: An industrial licence for Tata Motors for making light armoured vehicles was among 10 licences and 17 foreign technology collaborations approved Thursday by the Indian government.

Under the industrial licence granted to Tata Motors, a major maker of passenger cars and commercial vehicles, the company will be allowed to make light armoured multi-role vehicles, armoured engineer vehicles and bulletproof cars and jeeps, the commerce ministry said.

The other industrial licences cleared by Commerce Minister Arun Jaitley are in the textiles, industrial explosives, industrial machinery and automobile sectors.

Among the 17 foreign technology collaboration and franchise agreements approved was that of Wipro GE Medical Systems Ltd. for technical collaboration with US-based GE Medical Systems Global Technology Co. for making ultrasound diagnostic systems equipments and accessories.

The other approvals include Foseco India Ltd.'s technical collaboration with Britain's Foseco International Ltd. for making turbostop tundish flow control systems for continuous casting tundishes and the proposal of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd for technical collaboration with US-based UOP Ltd for revamp of its fluid catalytic cracking unit.

The proposals of Talbros Automotive Component Ltd. for technical collaboration with Britain's Federal Mogul Scaling Systems for making non-asbestos based gaskets, and of Kalyani Brakes Ltd. with Japan's Bosch Braking Systems Ltd. for hydraulic brake systems for passenger cars were also approved.

Since April last year, India has approved 153 foreign technology collaboration and franchise agreement proposals and 85 proposals on industrial licensing, the commerce ministry said.
