Tata Consultancy opens software centre in Mexico

Mexico City: Top Indian IT company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has opened a $10 million software centre in the city of Guadalajara to employ some 500 engineers over the next six months and 1,500 more by 2012. Mexican President Felipe Calder󮬠who inaugurated the TCS Global Technological Development Centre May 29, said the project would go a long way in pushing ties between India and his country. "The inauguration of this centre, together with expansion of Hewlett Packard's premises inaugurated this morning, are specific actions showing Mexico is an attractive destination for investment, particularly in information technology." Other officials present at the inauguration included Indian Ambassador to Mexico Rinzing Wangdi, TCS president Gabriel Rozman and TCS director general for Mexico Ankur Prakash. Officials said TCS centre is in the central-western state of Jalisco, which has a state-of-the-art technology corridor and has successfully adapted to global competition for which it is often referred to as the country's Silicon Valley. For the $4.3 billion TCS, South America is emerging as a major hub, since it set up operations at Montevideo in Uruguay in 2002. Last week, the company bought out its Brazilian partner in the 51:49 joint venture for $33.4 million. In Chile, where it commenced operations in 2002, TCS acquired a large business process outsourcing firm in 2005 and caters to some 75 clients in businesses ranging from financial services to retailing.
