GANDHINAGAR: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Asia's largest software services firm, Friday announced plans to set up an IT development centre in this Gujarat capital. Known to be a prime location for traditional industries but lagging behind in the sunrise IT industry, Gujarat hopes the entry of an international player like TCS will attract more firms to the state. "We are extremely happy to be part of this great state," said TCS CEO S. Ramadorai after a meeting with Chief Minister Narendra Modi here Friday morning. Ramadorai said his firm would set up a development centre on 20 acres in the Infocity IT park here. The centre will be functional within 18 months. "The centre will provide employment to 2,000 IT professionals and 10,000 others," he said. TCS has, however, not announced the quantum of investment in the new venture. Addressing reporters, Ramadorai said: "The personal support extended by Chief Minister Modi and his team is something we all should be very proud of." Modi welcomed the announcement and said: "The entry of TCS will bring about a magnetic change in Gujarat's IT sector. It will be a turning point in the development of the state." He informed Ramadorai and his team of the state government's recent initiatives in the IT sector. "Gujarat government has employed the IT infrastructure network of Gujarat State Wide Area Network (G-Swan), which is the largest Internet protocol in the Asia-Pacific region and the second largest in the world. "We use IT not for automation, but to make the governance effective. E-governance, for me, is effective governance," Modi said. He assured Ramadorai that Gujarat would provide the best business atmosphere to the IT sector, just as it was known to provide the same to the petrochemical and pharmaceutical sectors. TCS is a world-leading IT consulting, services and business process outsourcing organisation of the Tata Group. After an initial public offer, its shares were listed on stock exchanges last month.
