BANGALORE: Information technology major Tata Consultancy Services has joined hands with BioStrx, the first Israeli structural proteomics company, to offer optimised lead compounds for pharmaceutical and bio-tech firms across the globe.

The software solutions and consulting services giant signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with BioStrx to provide optimised leads for the "targetted proteins", but will not perform the two later stages of pre-clinical trials and clinical trials for the desired product.

"Our strengths in respective areas combined together provides a winning combination that will put us in an exclusive group of five-six companies in the world which provide such services," BioStrX chief executive Simone Botti told PTI after signing the draft of the MoU.

"The machines being used by BioStrx have been developed by a scientist we keep in high esteem and when we discussed our interests, we immediately sensed a profitable alliance that can take us to the global market together," TCS executive vice-president M Vidyasagar said after inking the pact.

Of the three stages involved in the process - protein crystallisation, structure determination and material synthesis - the first two will be carried out by BioStrx and TCS will give it the final touch.

The MoU was signed on the sidelines of a two-day conference on IT and biotechnology sponsored by CII in which leading Indian companies are participating.

Setting the tone for talks seeking joint ventures between Indian and Israeli firms, deputy director general of the Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute Yair Ofek said: "together we can be the superpowers of the hi-tech industry."
