Sterlite wins $76 Million BSNL contract
Bangalore: Sterlite Technologies, a provider of transmission solutions, has won a $76 million contract from BSNL, for enabling a Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network based on Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology. BSNL will be the first telecom operator in the country to deploy commercial scale FTTH network. The current phase will enable provision of high-speed internet, IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) solutions, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and other Value Added Services to about 5,00,000 subscribers. Planning is also on for similar FTTH networks in 25 cities across India by 2012, which would serve two million subscribers. This will give subscribers access to good bandwidth and speed (in excess of 100 Mb/s) as well as a variety of applications including utility applications like high-definition video conferencing or entertainment applications like high-speed gaming. Sterlite has streamlined its efforts to ensure that the contract is executed by FY10. In a recent global conference for optical communications and networking professionals in San Diego, California, Kuldeep Goyal, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, indicated that by 2011 up to five percent of all Indian households could have FTTH, and IPTV would be one of the key drivers for this growth. Anand Agarwal, CEO and Director, Sterlite Technologies said, "India is at the cross-roads in telecommunication technology, with networks being rolled out for 3G, WiMAX, NGN (Next Generation Networks) and FTTH. We believe FTTH will offer subscribers limitless possibilities by serving the requirements of bandwidth-hungry applications and this would revolutionize the way subscribers work, live and play."
