State Health Ministers' meet ends in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The three-day meeting of State Health Ministers, which ended here today, suggested a host of measures to improve the medical care scenario in the country. The Ministers said minimum one doctor and one nurse at each Primary Health Centre (PHC) should be made mandatory by March 2012 to bring down maternal and child mortality. The States should take immediate steps to increase intake capacity of MBBS students in all the Government-run medical colleges, the participants said. The meet resolved that as many as 150 auxiliary nursing and midwifery schools, sanctioned by the Centre, shall be made operational by March 2012. Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also took part in the deliberations. He asked the states to send proposals to the Ministry for starting new departments of psychiatric medicine, psychiatric nursing, clinical psychology and psychiatric social work in medical colleges.
