Snowden Gets Job Offer At VKontakte, Russia's Facebook

And within a few hours of his stay in Moscow, Snowden was offered a job by country’s most popular social networking site, which is regarded as Russia’s Facebook.  The site has claimed to have more than 210 million registered users with up to 47 million people checking in daily.

Over the past few months, the site’s founder Durov has faced murky legal charges and the sale of 48 percent of Vkontakte by longtime friends and investors to a fund with supposed ties to the ruling group around Vladimir Putin, reports BloombergBusiness. And the government after knowing internet’s potential as a political instrument may make efforts to monitor and control what is being said and shared online.

Durov’s job offer to Snowden comes as little surprise since he is an avowed tech-libertarian who has advocated for little or no government control over information and human capital. Though Vkontakte has not come under any overt pressure by the government, the move by Durov, is seen as a future capital.
