NEW DELHI: Skoda Auto India, a wholly owned subsidiary of global automobile major Volkswagen Group, Thursday unveiled its luxury Superb brand of cars in India to increase its market share. Priced at 2.34 million in Delhi, Superb will be sold in the local market as a completely built unit through the company's network of 35 dealers, said Imran Hassen, managing director of Skoda Auto India. "The Indian market presents a great opportunity for Skoda to showcase its latest offering Superb," Hassen told a news conference here. "The Superb is among the most successful products from Skoda's worldwide stable." The car comes equipped with power seats, six airbags, a trip computer, CD player, air conditioner, heating elements and a steering wheel that is adjustable for reach and height. Hassen said Skoda had identified India as one of the key growth markets in the region. "We are studying the possibility of introducing more models in the near future and widening our product portfolio. "Accordingly, we have embarked on an ambitious programme to widen our reach and network," he said, noting Skoda Auto India expects to sell around 500 units of Superb in the first year of its launch. Skoda Auto India sells four luxury models in India - the top end Skoda L&K, Skoda Elegance, Skoda Ambiente, and Skoda Superb. The company has sold over 13,000 units since its foray into the country in 2001. India's car market has come a long way in recent years. From the economically priced Maruti-Suzuki 800 compact to the Maybach, the new car craze in India is unmistakable. Car sales in the domestic market rose from 541,491 in fiscal 2002-03 to 696,207 in the year ended March 31, 2004, registering a growth of 27 percent year-on-year as a booming economy boosted consumer spending.
