Bangalore: Between work, home, kids and everything else, you might end up hitting a fast-food joint or coffeehouse in search of breakfast. The bad news: there is loads of unhealthy enticement out there. The good news: many franchises and food joints have jumped on the health bandwagon and now recommend better options. Here's what to shun, as well as better-for-you alternatives:

What to skip: Most coffeehouses have plenty of fat bombs like donuts, fritters, croissants and the like on their breakfast menu. Instead have a yogurt or a shake from any of the joints. It's healthier, nutritious and contains comparatively lesser calories.

What to skip: With MC Donald's coming out with a whole range of breakfast stuff, you would think the honour of the worst breakfast would go to its Egg McMuffins, but it actually is the Big Breakfast with Hotcakes. It has 1,090 calories, 56 grams of fat and 2,150 milligrams of sodium. If you cannot resist the Egg Mc Muffin or the Sausage muffin, order it without the cheese so that it comes in at not-so-bad 250 calories, 9 grams of fat, and 15 grams of protein.

What to skip: If you are one of those who stick to the so-called-healthy smoothies for breakfast, you have trouble brewing. Ask the question how bad can a smoothie be and we will tell you - a regular size peanut butter smoothie comes with a whooping 650 calories, all slurped down before you know it! Replace that morning smoothie with oatmeal that comes with a little soymilk and a cup of cut banana. The calorie count stays at 240, comes with 6 grams of fiber and 9 grams of protein that will keep you away from food until lunchtime.

What to skip: For people, who invented fast food, grabbing sandwiches for breakfast thinking its healthy isn't new. But what they don't understand is that anything that comes with 500 calories and 25 grams of fat isn't healthy. It also keeps you dragging all morning. Replace those heavy, unhealthy sandwiches with ham, eggs and a muffin. This simple indulgence comes with 170 calories and 4 grams of fat. The 14 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber will satiate you till noon.

What to skip: Who said sesame bagels with cream cheese is healthy? It's very generous with its calorie count as it come comes with 440 calories and 14 grams of fat. After all, the bagels have gotten big and so have the generous amounts of cream cheese. Go for the skinny bagels with hummus, it has heart healthy fat, proteins and twenty percent of iron that you need.
