Should Sports Betting Be Legalized In India To Eradicate Corruption?

On the other hand, the Union sports ministry too is examining the possibility of legalizing sports betting in the nation. This is partly in response to growing pressure to restrict the growing industry that tends to cross ethical limitations and also to raise funds for the development of sports.

Bollywood actress and co-owner of the Kings XI Punjab franchise Preity Zinta said "There should be stronger measures by the anti-corruption unit to monitor it and I know I am digressing a bit, but may be if we legalise betting, it would not be a problem," as reported by India Blooms.

Former India football captain Baichung Bhutia was also of the opinion that betting should be legalized in India to stop corruption in cricket. He said "In Europe betting is legalized and you don't come across such scams everyday in football like you get to see it in cricket. I think legalizing would make it better," as reported by PTI.

However, every coin has two sides and betting being legalized may have its own cons too. The government is working towards figuring out a solution to end this practice that taints the game. It can only be hoped that the game is revived and played with the right spirit and a corruption free sport be brought back to India.
