Shockingly Expensive Foods Across the World

2. Saffron (Spice)

Price: Ranges Between 60,000 To 6,00,000 Per Kilograms

Saffron is a spice derived from the flower of saffron crocus. To make half a kilogram of dry saffron you would need around a jaw dropping 50,000 to 75,000 flowers.  To make understanding the amount needed all you need to do is imagine a football field full of these flowers.

Now we have the answer to why Saffron features in the most expensive foods list. Because each flower's stigmas need to be collected by hand and there are only a few per flower, saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. The sheer amount of flowers and labor that goes into making half a kilogram is the reason!

This most expensive spice is indigenous to South west Asia. Greece is the place believed to be the origin of saffron. It was later brought to Eurasia and then later brought to parts of North Africa, North America, and Oceania.
