MUMBAI: The markets recovered smartly as heavyweights bounced back from their lower levels amid fresh buying. The BSE-30 share Index closed 55 points higher at 6299, while the Nifty shut shop at 1948, up 18 points. The sentiment was cautiously optimistic on the back of weak global cues and sustained profit booking. Gains in auto ancillaries, index heavyweights, auto counters, cement, banks, engineering, infrastructure, technology and oil PSUs added to the strength in the Sensex. Textiles, power, select pharma counters; media and infrastructure stocks also attracted significant buying. Among index heavyweights, Satyam led the gainers' list, surging over four per cent. L&T, Reliance Industries, SBI, TISCO, ITC and Tata Power were the other key gainers.
