NEW DELHI: With the increasing number of cyber crimes, IT companies have given top priority to the security systems. The companies have assigned special budgets that encompass security practices in an organization. For this, IT and BPO firms have decided to allocate about 15-20 percent of the total IT budget for security initiatives.

As of now, most companies have in place solutions that cover only external threats such as viruses, intrusion, hacking, spam and detection. But they are slowly waking up to the fact that there is a need to protect data from internal threats.

According to a Nasscom survey, companies have increased their IT budget by almost 45 percent compared to their last year’s IT security spending. According to Sascha Beyer, Managing Director of Pointsec India, a security system vendor, there is little point in protecting the office network itself when employees have mobile devices which can easily download and carry data.

There is a need to develop an end-to-end integrated security system which will enable these networks to identify threats and react appropriately based on risks, he said.

“We have re-engineered our workflow engine to provide a point-to-point trail from every individual job, enabling the company to manage compliances with its privacy procedures at each step of the process,” said Rajiv Shetye, vice-president operations, Spyrance India, a BPO company.

Most of the BPO firms have stopped allowing camera mobile phones on premises and cell phones have to be switched off on the shop floor. Even e-mail access has been barred for employees working on sensitive data and no paper or storage devices are allowed on the shop floor. These types of stringent methods may help the companies to keep the confidentiality of data, he added.
