50,000 Cr Chip Plant To Be Built By IBM, STMicro In India

Concessions will play a major role:

Now looking from the companies’ point of view, the units are expected to get concessions worth nearly 60,000 crore over 13 years, which means a three-year construction period and the first 10 years of operations.

Nations like Taiwan, South Korea and China have already been using these concessional clauses to attract investors, and so far they have been successful.

Commerce minister Anand Sharma stated that the government is trying to overcome nation’s dependency on import of products. The only solution for this dilemma is by building local manufacturing units within the nation. Sharma also commented that the demand for electronic hardware is expected to reach $440 billion by 2020, compared to around $45 billion as of now.

In its second attempt to lure the chipmakers into the country, the Indian government estimated an investment of around $100 billion, which will create around $28 million.

Despite of all these speculations, India, being an important centre for chip design and verification, clearly misses out on chip and electronics production since it’s non-existent in the country.
