SANTA CLARA: Riverstone Networks' board of directors on Tuesday named Romulus Pereira as chairman of the board and acting chief executive officer, effective immediately.

Pereira, the CEO of Riverstone since its inception, succeeds Piyush Patel as chairman, who will remain on the board as a director. The company also announced that it has launched a search for a new chief executive to lead Riverstone's product expansion and growth.

"Romulus brings a deep understanding of the networking industry and superior technical knowledge to his new leadership role," said Patel. "He is committed to being an active chairman, allowing Riverstone to continue to benefit from his management strengths, leadership and industry vision."

Over the past several quarters, Riverstone has been expanding its product and market focus to include mission critical networking environments that could benefit from Riverstone's carrier class technology, such as governments, education and research institutions as well as finance and health care organizations. The company has announced recent product deployments at the Pentagon, University of Arizona, and in a province-wide education network in Anhui, China.

"As Riverstone continues to broaden its strategic focus, we look to strengthen our management team by adding more operational and execution capabilities," said Pereira. "I look forward to shifting my focus more towards the company's strategy to ensure Riverstone's continued success in the networking industry."

On April 7, Riverstone introduced the first true line rate 10 Gigabit Ethernet platform at an industry leading price and performance point. The Riverstone XGS family of switches complements Riverstone's RS family of routers, which are deployed in mission critical networks around the world, including KT, Telefonica de Espana and Cox Communications. With the introduction of the XGS, Riverstone now delivers a seamless solution from the carrier edge to campus networks.
